What's the future of elder care? What do we want for ourselves as we grow older? At HouseWorks, we're constantly asking these questions as we work with others to transform visionary ideas into real-world answers for seniors and their families.
A New Approach to Aging in Place
Across the country, people in their 50s and 60s are coming together to take control of where and how they’ll live in the years ahead. These aging Baby Boomers and recent retirees are the vanguard of a social revolution. Rather than moving to senior housing for the services and social support they provide, these visionaries can realistically expect to continue living in their own homes, supported by the membership organization that they themselves have created.
Inspired by Beacon Hill Village, Capitol Hill Village, and similar ventures, these intentional communities emphasize choice, control, and continuity of lifelong connections and activities. By building community among members, organizing local resources, and developing relationships with service providers, these membership organizations address two problems that so often precipitate a move to senior housing: lack of reliable support services and social isolation.
HouseWorks’ Involvement
HouseWorks has been a strategic partner and the preferred home care provider of Beacon Hill Village since its inception in 2002, and the company has also been selected as the preferred home care provider for two new communities: Cambridge at Home in Cambridge, MA and The Watergate Initiative in Washington, D.C. HouseWorks supports the movement's growth nationwide and is co-sponsoring a networking group for Washington-area founders in partnership with AAHSA. To learn more, contact sfienberg@house-works.com.
