Starting the conversation
The words “you need help” are as hard to say as they are to hear. As difficult as it may be to get started, this conversation is likely to be one of the most important talks that you have with your parents. And odds are, there will be more than one of these conversations. It’s really more of a process. Just know, family conflict can become more frequent as health declines and end of life gets closer.
Do it now
Start talking before a crisis occurs, when all involved can fully participate. Ask your parents about their personal legacy — how they want to leave their mark on the world. Talk about advance directives. Have an open discussion about finances. Know that this is as hard for them as it is for you. Be patient. Take little steps. And most importantly, listen.
