In December of 2009, HouseWorks Co-founder Alan D. Solomont was nominated by President Barack Obama to be Ambassador of the United States of America to Spain and Andorra. Shortly after his January 2010 Senate confirmation, the ambassador and his wife Susan moved to Spain, where he presented his credentials to His Majesty King Juan Carlos I of Spain.
Mr. Solomont is a long-time political activist. Prior to his nomination, Mr. Solomont served as Chairman of the bipartisan Board of Directors of the Corporation for National and Community Service. He was appointed by President Clinton in 2000, re-appointed by President Bush in 2007, and elected Chairman in 2009. A longtime leader in the Democratic Party, Mr. Solomont served as National Finance Chair from 1997 to 1998. He was a crucial supporter of John Kerry’s and Barack Obama’s presidential campaigns.
Mr. Solomont is also a philanthropist and healthcare entrepreneur. Throughout his career, he has played a key role in promoting innovation and quality in the delivery of services to an aging population. As founder and CEO of the A•D•S Group, Mr. Solomont helped build a broad and innovative network of post-acute elder care services. Following the sale of the A•D•S Group in 1997, he shifted his focus from facility-based to home-based care and launched HouseWorks with co-founder Andrea Cohen in 1998.
Mr. Solomont served on several non-profit and for profit boards, including Boston Medical Center, Boston Private Bank & Trust Company, Angel Healthcare Investors, The New Israel Fund, Israel Policy Forum, the University of Massachusetts Lowell, the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library Foundation, and the WGBH Educational Foundation. He chaired the Board of Combined Jewish Philanthropies of Greater Boston and of Hebrew SeniorLife, one of the largest non-profit geriatric care providers in the Northeast. Mr. Solomont was a trustee of his alma mater, Tufts University, where he served on the Board of the Tisch College of Citizenship and Public Service and was a Visiting Instructor in the Political Science Department. In 2004, he was named Philanthropist of the Year by the Association of Fundraising Professionals.
Mr. Solomont holds a B.A. in Political Science and Urban Studies from Tufts University and a B.S. in Nursing from the University of Massachusetts Lowell. In 1994, Mr. Solomont received an Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters from the University of Massachusetts Lowell.
